How do I install a new kitchen sink?

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

  • New kitchen sink (make sure it fits the hole in your worktop)
  • Sink mounting clips (usually supplied with the sink)
  • Plumber’s putty
  • Silicone sealant (caulk)
  • Pipe wrench
  • Adjustable spanner
  • Slip-joint pliers
  • PTFE (plumber’s) tape (for threaded pipe connections)
  • Basin wrench (handy for tight spaces under the sink)
  • Bucket or towels (to catch any water)
  • Pipe cutter or hacksaw (if you need to trim any pipes)

Step-by-Step Installation:

1. Prepare the Worktop

If the hole in your worktop is already cut for the sink, ensure it’s clean and smooth. If it’s too small for your new sink, you’ll need to enlarge the hole. Many sinks come with a template to guide you in cutting.

2. Position the Sink

Dry-fit the sink into the hole before applying anything permanent. Make sure it sits properly and that the edges align with the worktop. This step ensures you won’t have to redo anything later.

3. Apply Plumber’s Putty or Silicone Sealant

  • Apply a thin bead of plumber’s putty or silicone sealant around the lip of the sink (the edge that rests on the worktop). This provides a watertight seal between the sink and the worktop.
  • Silicone sealant is often the better choice for a more durable, cleaner finish, but plumber’s putty works fine for most installations. If you use putty, wipe off any excess once the sink is in place.

4. Install the Sink

Carefully lower the sink into the worktop opening, making sure it aligns with the hole. If your sink has mounting clips, position these around the sink’s rim as you place it into position.

5. Secure the Sink

  • Tighten the mounting clips underneath the sink (these generally come with the sink). Use a pipe wrench or adjustable spanner to secure the clips. Be careful not to overtighten—this could damage the sink or the worktop.
  • If your sink has pre-drilled holes for screws, use these to fix it in place (depending on the sink design).

6. Connect the Drain

  • Drain assembly: Install the drain fitting (the piece that connects to the waste pipe). This usually involves positioning a rubber gasket and tightening it using a spanner.
  • P-trap installation: Attach the drain to the P-trap (the U-shaped pipe that prevents foul smells from coming back up). Wrap PTFE tape around any threaded pipe connections to ensure a good seal.
  • Connect the tailpiece (the straight drain pipe) to the trap and tighten it using your spanners.

7. Attach the Water Supply Lines

  • Install the tap (faucet): Fit the tap into place according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply PTFE tape to any threaded connections before tightening with a spanner.
  • Connect the hot and cold water supply lines to the tap. Tighten the connections securely, but be careful not to overtighten.

8. Check for Leaks

  • Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Inspect the drain, tap, and water supply lines. If you find any leaks, tighten the connections a little more, or use more PTFE tape where needed.
  • Run the tap for a minute or so to ensure everything is sealed properly.

9. Seal the Edges

Once the sink is securely fitted and there are no leaks, apply a thin bead of silicone sealant around the edge of the sink where it meets the worktop. Smooth the sealant with your finger, and clean up any excess with a damp cloth.

Helpful Tips:

  • Take your time: It’s better to double-check your work than rush through it. Ensuring everything is tight and properly sealed can save you headaches down the line.
  • Use a basin wrench if space under the sink is limited. It’s great for tightening hard-to-reach nuts and bolts.
  • If you’re unsure about the measurements or the plumbing connections, it’s always worth calling a professional plumber to avoid any costly mistakes or damage.
